Will Mets Get 60 Homers From Their Outfield?

I’m a little worried about where our power will come from in 2009. We can easily count on Carlos Beltran to hit at least twenty-five homers and most likely thirty, but then what? The Mets don’t have that prototypical power hitting corner outfielder in left field or right. The most homeruns that right-fielder Ryan Church ever hit in a season was fifteen, and at 30-years old, he isn’t getting any younger or better. Who knows what we can expect [...]

Mets Sign Another Outfielder, Rob Mackowiak

The New York Post is reporting that the Mets have signed lefthanded outfielder, Rob Mackowiak. In a continuing collection of lefty-hitting outfielders, the New York Mets have signed Rob Mackowiak to a minor league contract, the Post has learned. If Mackowiak makes the team he will have a base salary of $600,000 and he has a chance to earn an additional $200,000 in bonuses depending on plate appearances between 250 and 500. Mackowiak, 32, played in [...]

Where Are Our Right-handed Bats?

Don’t look now, but there’s an epidemic shortage of right-handed hitting on the Mets bench. Projected Lineup 1B – Carlos Delgado (L) 2B – Luis Castillo (S) SS – Jose Reyes (S) 3B – David Wright (R)  C – Brian Schneider (L) LF – Fernando Tatis (R) / Dan Murphy (L) CF – Carlos Beltran (S) RF – Ryan Church (L) Projected Bench IF – Alex Cora (L), Argenis Reyes (S) OF – Marlon Anderson (L), Cory [...]

Is Jeff Kent A Hall Of Famer?

With the retirement of second baseman Jeff Kent now a thing of the past, the argument now shifts to his credentials for the Hall Of Fame. In my opinion, he is not only worthy of the Hall of Fame, but he should be a first ballot Hall of Famer. What sets him apart from the tainted numbers of other sluggers in his era, was Kent’s vehement opposition to steroids. Let’s look at what some in [...]

Mets Sign Pitcher Freddy Garcia

According to Adam Rubin of the Daily News, the Mets have signed righthanded starter Feddy Garcia. Freddy Garcia is a Met. The righthander agreed to a minor-league deal with the Mets tonight, the Daily News has learned. It’s believed he can earn as much as $8 million to $9 million if he makes the team and reaches all of his incentives. Nice signing for the Mets, especially if Garcia returns to his pre-injury form. It’s [...]

Nothing Worth Seeing

Outside of Citi Field itself, that is exactly how it is going to be on opening day if the Mets do not get themselves some help with that starting rotation. Good pitching stops good hitting. We all know this. It’s drilled into our brains by every baseball analyst on television and in the papers. NEWSFLASH! Right now the Mets do not have enough pitching. All they have are Johan Santana and Mike Pelfrey as their number [...]

Done Deal – Alex Cora Makes It Official

Earlier today, the Mets today officially announced the signing of infielder Alex Cora to a $2 million dollar, one-year contract. Cora gives the Mets a solid backup shortstop and second baseman whoc could even step in and start should Luis Castillo falter. Omar Minaya was all smiles as he made the announcement and said, “You win championships with a 25-man roster. Alex Cora has been an integral part of teams that have been to the postseason [...]

F-Mart Ranked 16th Overall, Mets Farm System 17th

ESPN’s Keith Law recently released his Top 100 Prospects list and ranked Mets outfielder Fernando Martinez at number sixteen.  Martinez’s big issue is staying healthy; he has yet to reach 400 plate appearances or play in 100 games during any of his pro seasons, excluding winter ball. This is a shame, because Martinez has a special bat and the injuries plus some aggressive promotions have obscured it. Martinez offers huge power potential, putting on a [...]

Nelson Figueroa Throws A No-Hitter?

According to Mets.com, Mets right-hander Nelson Figueroa (Mets) didn’t surrender a hit over nine innings for the Cardenales. He fanned 10 and allowed a hit and a walk over nine-plus frames en route to the victory. Entering the 10th inning with a 1-0 lead, Figueroa gave up a single to center field to Zulia’s Alberto Callaspo (Royals). Geez… Even when a Mets pitcher throws nine hitless innings, he still can’t get a no-hitter… Not even in [...]

Why Not Fonzi?

Remember the good ‘ole days when the New York Mets had “The Best Infield Ever” as described by a cover on Sports Illustrated? Remember who made up that infield? John Olerud, 1B; Edgardo Alfonzo, 2B; Rey Ordóñez, SS; and Robin Ventura, 3B. No other team could compete with that. The combination of number 13 and number 10 alone was incredible. How about bringing back some of that stellar defense with Fonzi? At 35 years of [...]

(Orange and) Blue Light Special

This sounds like a joke. Brian Cashman and Hank Steinbrenner walk onto a car lot and immediately head over to the brand new 2009 Lexus. One hour later, Omar and Jeff Wilpon walk onto a car lot. They walk right by the newer models and instead choose to look at a used 72 Pinto. I’m not going to write about the Wilpon’s being cheap. We have the 3rd highest payroll in baseball and that argument [...]
