What’s In A Name Anyway?

Representatives Dennis Kucinich and Ted Poe are urging the Obama administration to get Citigroup out of Citi Field. They are demanding that to 20-year/$400 million deal be dropped because of a $45 billion bailout and because 50,000 employees will be losing their jobs. I never liked the name Citi Field. To me, it sounded kind of silly. Even sillier was the explanation that it was the city’s field. Or something like that. Like, what happens [...]

Oliver Perez Will Sign This Weekend Or Mets Will Move On?

Last week I wrote that I had a hunch that if Oliver Perez was going to sign with the Mets, it would happen by this weekend. I still feel that way, but I’m a little skeptical about whether Oliver Perez wants to play for the Mets in the first place. He has said nothing about having a desire to return to the Mets in all this time. What is he waiting for to take the [...]

Around The Majors

A recent USA Today article discusses the proverbial winners and losers of the 2008-09 offseason. Obviously the signing period is not over and the rankings could change depending on where major free agents like Manny Ramirez, Adam Dunn, and Ben Sheets sign. Of note to Met fans are the ranking that the team garnered at #2. Let Bob Nightengale explain: The Mets decided to do something to change their gags of the last two Septembers. [...]

Boys of Summer

I love music. As I’m sure many of you can agree, there are poignant moments in our lives when we can not only remember what was happening, but also be able to put a song to it. Case in point, 1988 NLCS. Mets vs. Dodgers. The two teams traded punches back and forth until Game 7 when the Orel Hershiser led Dodgers shutout the Mets 6-0 and ended the Mets season. I can remember waking up [...]

That Nagging Feeling

It’s only late January, it’s already late January. Are you feeling as if K-Rod and the guy whose name is profane in Yiddish maybe aren’t the pieces that make us complete? Maybe eight-ten more saves and a few fewer blown games won’t get us over the hump? Now, hold on just a minute, you say. We’ve added Tim Redding, Freddy Garcia, Alex Cora, Rob Mackowiak, and, um, er some other guys this winter. Heck, we [...]

Mets Home Opener, Subway Series Tickets To Be Sold In Lottery

One of our writers Tanya, got in touch with the CitiField ticket office regarding single game ticket sales. I’ll let her tell you the rest. I spoke with two people over at the Sh…er…Citi Field ticket office. So weird to say that. I asked them when the single game tickets will go on sale, and if Opening Day and the Subway Series will be a part of that. Here’s what they told me. While there is [...]

Detroit Tigers pitching coach Rick Knapp is saying Kenny Rogers has decided to retire, according to mlive.com. Rogers has not made this official. Knapp is claiming since he is close to the pitcher, he claims it as fact. Other reports have indicated the 44 year old pitcher has been contemplating coming back in 2009 to give himself another year. Should he retire, he will be known by one horrible moment in Mets Fan-dom and one [...]

Special Feature: Strawberry Fields Forever

There have only been a handful of players in Mets history that can be referred to by first name only. One of these is Darryl. Colorful, exciting and controversial, the life of Darryl Strawberry resembles a Shakespearean Tragedy. He thrived playing major league baseball, battled personal demons, defeated drug and alcohol addiction and encountered legal problems. His fall from grace was monumental. But his life has come full circle. On May 6, 1983 Tom Seaver [...]
