cespedes presser

Yoenis Cespedes was officially introduced to the media in a press conference held on Wednesday at Citi Field. After a brief introduction by general manager Sandy Alderson, Cespedes answered questions through interpreter Melissa Rodriguez.

“I know this team has everything it needs to continue on what we started last year. Now that it’s official, I can say I’m very happy to be putting on my Mets jersey again,” said Cespedes in his opening statement.

Cespedes told reporters he always knew he wanted to come back to New York. “The fans showed me incredible support from my very first day. I just knew that I wanted to come back. I knew the Mets were who I wanted to be with.”

What really stood out for me was when he was asked to explain why he chose the Mets when there may have been much better offers out there such as the ones Justin Upton and Jason Heyward received.

“It was very important for me to rejoin my teammates and finish what we started here with the New York Mets. We have some unfinished business that we intend to take care of this season. It was very important to me.”

“I’m really excited about the upcoming season. I’m really happy to be with the Mets and I’m really excited to be here for the next three years.”

“I want to convince all my teammates that we have it within us to finish what we started last year. That is the mission. That is the focus. We have everything in place to win it all. We are in it to win it.”
