Ronald Blum of the Associated Press is reporting that, as part of the settlement agreed to between the New York Mets and Yoenis Cespedes, the outfielder will only have a $6 million base salary for the 2020 season.
However, his base pay is $11 million if he starts the season with the team on Opening Day or if the reason the doesn’t have anything to do with the right foot or ankle injury he sustained on May 18 that started this turn of events.
Mike Puma of the New York Post writes that the Mets have disputed the $6 million salary report and say that Cespedes’ base salary is actually closer to $10 million.
Cespedes, 34, will be getting a massive pay cut with that being the case as he was set to make $29.5 million this upcoming season before this agreement.
Of the $110 million he was set to make in his original four-year pact signed after the 2016 season, Cespedes could lose as much as $29.6 million from it.
For a breakdown of the specifics of the incentives he can earn in 2020, which can bring his salary as high as $20 million next season if he gets 650 plate appearances, check out Blum’s article.
