Gabriel Ynoa was named the Eastern League pitcher of the week by Milb.com.

Ynoa fired a complete game shutout in his only start last week for Double-A Binghamton. He allowed one hit and struck out six batters during his dominant performance. A single he yielded in the 3rd inning was the only time a hitter reached base against the Mets’ underrated right hander.

In Single-A St. Lucie, John Gant was also named pitcher of the week. He struck out ten batters, and he did not allow a run during eight strong innings.

Gant has a 3.06 ERA in 82.2 innings between St.Lucie and Double-A Binghamton. He was recently recalled to Double-A on Sunday.

Ynoa may not have the same overpowering stuff as other Mets’ prospects, but he’s a solid pitcher in his own right.

His career record in the minors is 43-21 with a 3.17 ERA. He was also named baseball’s top sleeper by Jonathan Mayo of MLB.com during the offseason.

“What Ynoa can do is throw strikes. He walked 1.5 per nine innings across two levels, reaching Double-A, in 2014. And that was a career high. It made Ynoa’s career walk rate skyrocket all the way up to 1.2. He made 25 starts in 2014 and walked exactly that many batters, 25. In his Minor League career, Ynoa has issued 63 walks in 86 total games. Everyone realizes how insane that is, right?”

Ynoa has a 5-5 record this year with a 4.12 ERA and 1.21 WHIP. However, he’s performed much better of late. He’s allowed only four runs in his last 30.2 innings pitched.
