The New York Mets (55-51) defeated the New York Yankees (53-53) by a score of 7-1 tonight at Citi Field. The two teams have split the first two games of the home and away four-game Subway Series.
Pitching:
Jacob deGrom (W, 7-5) came right back to the mound with pure deGromination Tuesday night. He pitched seven shutout innings while allowing just four hits and one walk while striking out eight. A dominant game from a guy who is yet again starting to solidify himself as the Mets ace.
Returning Met, Jon Niese pitched the eighth and ninth innings for the team to finish off the game. Niese looked shaky at times, allowing one run on two hits while walking one and striking out two.
Offense:
A much needed offensive explosion for a team who needed a laugher.
Alejandro De Aza got things going, as he continued his hot streak with a two-run bomb in the third to get the Mets on the board. Travis d’Arnaud tacked on a homer of his own in the fifth to put the team up by a score of 3-0.
Then came the seventh. The offense broke it open, scoring four runs in the inning as all nine men came to bat. Michael Conforto, Matt Reynolds, Yoenis Cespedes and Neil Walker all had a RBI to put the Mets up by a score of 7-0 in the inning.
Notes:
The Mets offense has now scored five more runs in three consecutive games.
Jay Bruce went 0-for-4 in his Mets debut.
On Deck:
The Subway Series moves to the Bronx for the final two games as LHP Steven Matz (8-7, 3.35 ERA) toes the rubber for Mets and will be opposed by Yankees RHP Chad Green (1-2, 4.56 ERA). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM ET.
