After the New York Yankees defeated the New York Mets 7-5 on Thursday night to complete a four-game sweep, their social media department took to Twitter to brutally hammer the Mets – Game of Thrones style.

It’s not the first time the Yankees have trolled the Mets, but they’ve really ramped it up this season and especially during the Subway Series.

“Bend the knee” is a command that kings and queens demand from their enemies on HBO’s Game of Thrones. It’s connotation is quite simple:

Bend the knee and pledge your undying loyalty… or die.

The Mets’ Twitter account did not strike back and just took it on the chin.

Additionally, the Empire State Building lit up the skies over New York City with a “dazzling light show” to honor the Yankees supremacy over the Mets. They usually do this every year for the Subway Series, but this time it was a little more flashy as you can see in their tweet below.

The old saying applies here. “To the winner goes the spoils.” The Yankees earned their bragging rights as did their boisterous fans, while the Mets were sent to the corner without dinner.

I’m not mad at the Yankees (65-55) , who currently own the first Wild Card in the American League. Here’s a team that nobody saw being this good, this fast, and going to the playoffs.

Meanwhile the Mets (53-66) are 13 games under .500 in the NL East and their immediate future is cast in doubt. This is a team that underwent a long and arduous rebuild and will finish the season with 90+ losses, only two years removed from a trip to the World Series.

Keith Hernandez said that these were two teams going in opposite directions. “Look at all these incredible young franchise-building players the Yankees now have. This year was supposed to be all about the Mets’ young players as they headed to another postseason. But the Yankees flipped the script.”

Gary Cohen told WFAN this was one of the most disappointing Mets seasons he has ever experienced and compared this team to the 1992 Mets that signed Bobby Bonilla and Eddie Murray.

“This year, they have a bit of an excuse because they’ve had so many pitching injuries, but they’ve also had a tremendous amount of under-performance,” Cohen told Mike Francesa. “And I think for them to be languishing 11 games under .500 in the middle of August is an enormous disappointment.”

SNY analyst Ron Darling also chimed in, admitting that he totally got it wrong when he predicted huge seasons from Matt Harvey, Noah Syndergaard and Steven Matz.

“I really thought that Harvey had something to prove, Syndergaard was going to work himself into one of the best pitchers in baseball, and that Matz was going to be prove that he could be healthy,” Darling said. “I thought it was going to be a perfect storm for all of them to succeed this year.”

Darling now believes that the days of banking on this great Mets rotation is now over.

All I know is that this is going to be one heck of an offseason for Sandy Alderson and his lieutenants. He will have his work cut out for him. This team hasn’t had this many question marks since the 2010 and 2011 seasons.

As for the Yankees, let them have their fun. After all, a year ago the Mets were on Twitter day in and day out bragging that the Mets Own The City complete with t-shirts. Seems kind of comical now.
