The Yankees have been scouting Steven Matz this spring as their rotation has been decimated by the injuries of Luis Severino and James Paxton. The New York Post reports that the Yankees have contacted the Mets about Matz’s availability.

Post also notes that there’s skepticism the Mets would look to deal Matz right now, but if they did, Yankees infielder/outfielder Miguel Andujar would likely be a player the Mets had interest in.

Matz, 28, had a 4.21 ERA, 1.34 WHIP, and 2.2 bWAR in a career-high 160 1/3 innings during 2019 for the Mets. The New York native is under contract through the 2021 season.

Matz is currently in a battle with veteran right-handers Rick Porcello and Michael Wacha to round out the Mets rotation. All of whom have pitched well in very small sample sizes this spring.

However, Porcello and Wacha are only on one-year deals, and fellow right-hander Marcus Stroman will be a free agent after the 2020 season as well.
