New York Mets’ left fielder, Yoenis Cespedes, left today’s game after apparently injuring his thumb sliding safely into third base on a double steal executed by him and Jay Bruce.

Adrian Gonzalez doubled both Cespedes and Bruce home to give the Mets a 4-0 lead, but Cespedes did not return to left for the bottom half of the inning. Brandon Nimmo took his place.

Cespedes, 32, is currently hitting .219/.279/.416 with a league-leading 43 strikeouts, but also has six home runs and 25 RBI. He leads the team with a .346/.419/.615 slash line in 26 at-bats with runners in scoring position (18 RBI).

Losing him for an extended period of time will surely take a toll on the Mets’ offense.

As per Kristie Ackert of the New York Daily News, the Mets say he suffered a “sore left thumb”.

Manager Mickey Callaway confirmed the X-Rays on Cespedes’s thumb came back negative, but he will get checked out again when they get back to New York.

Due to the injury, Cespedes will likely miss three days, according to the outfielder.

“That’s not the first time this has happened to me,” Cespedes said after Sunday’s game via an interpreter. “I would say that I will need to take off three days.”

We will keep you updated on Cespedes’ status as more information becomes available.
