David Wright went 2-3 with a HR and two RBI and the Mets behind Mike Pelfrey’s pitching won the first game against the Minnesota Twins, 5-2.

Game Recap

Mike Pelfrey did not have his best stuff today, but still managed to pitch a quality six innings. Big Pelf gave up two runs on six hits with no walks and two strikeouts. Although Pelfrey did not walk a batter, the patient Twins hitters were fouling off pitches, and Pelfrey was having trouble keeping the ball down in the zone, as shown by his seven groundouts to the nine flyouts including the rare HR allowed. At the end of the day as a Mets fan it is just good to see Big Pelf regain some confidence and put together a quality outing.

The bullpen came out and proceeded to do what it has done for the better part of the last month, shutting out the opposition. Bobby Parnell, in his second appearance this season after replacing Jenrry Mejia, came out for a clean inning, striking out one and getting two groundouts. If Parnell can keep the ball down and continue to get batters out, he can be a very valuable member of the Mets bullpen, or even be showcased as trade bait. Perpetual Pedro Feliciano came on for only the second time since June 18th, and would pitch a clean inning striking out two. Frankie Rodriguez, walking his usual tight-rope, proceeded to get his 17th save of the season, striking out one and giving up two hits.

Not enough can truly be said about the Mets bullpen. I for one cannot truly recall the last time the bullpen lapsed and LOST the Mets a game (the 18-6 debacle doesn’t count, not one pitcher had ANY success)

The lumber squad decided that the fourth inning would be the inning to pounce on the opposition, with David Wright starting it off with a double that would score Jose Reyes. Ike Davis would hit a single to center, and David Wright would score on a great baserunning play on a horrible throw to the plate. Jason Bay would tack on the last run of the inning with another double, scoring Ike Davis. Jose Reyes would add a sacrifice fly in the fifth inning, scoring Ruben Tejada. The nail in the coffin was hammered in by “Mr. Unclutch” David Wright on an opposite way HR.

Jesus Feliciano went 0-2 filling in for Angel Pagan.

Josh Thole, in his season debut, went 0-3.

Jeff Francoeur is 1-19 since June 19th, so this may possibly be the beginning of a cold streak.

Jose Reyes, still sizzling. 2-3 with a run scored and an important sacrifice fly.

Turning Point

When David Wright hit the HR in the sixth inning, it gave the Mets a comfortable lead and allowed Jerry Manuel to utilize his bullpen as intended.

Game Ball

David Wright. 2-3, HR, 2 RBI, BB, K. David filled up the stat line, but some of those final numbers still look a little ugly. David is hitting .298 on the year with 86 K’s and 41 walks. But can anyone complain? 13 HR and 59 RBI…nearly .300 average…12 SB’s.

On Deck

The Mets will look to win another series at home, sending Johan Santana to the mound against former Yankee DL resident Carl Pavano and the Minnesota Twins. Game time is 1:10 PM.
