The Mets (70-83) lost to the Pirates (75-78) by the score of 10-6 on Tuesday evening at Citi Field.

I have to be honest – I am low on energy tonight. So I apologize in advance if this is a little…lackluster. David’s face describes my mood. Kudos to him, though, as he tied the Mets all-time hit record.

This was not Collin McHugh’s night at all as he struggled mightily against the Pirates in what can be filed under the expected growing pains of a young pitcher. He was only able to record four outs while allowing five hits and three walks – with no strikeouts recorded. One of those hits was a HR, allowed in the first, to Pedro Alvarez to top off a four-run first against him. He was knocked out in the second in favor of Justin Hampson, who came in with the bases loaded and allowed only one to cross the plate, via error. Hampson would go on to hold the Pirates scoreless for the next 2.2 innings.

Elvin Ramirez came out of the pen next, and struggled with his control as he allowed an earned run off three walks and a hit over two innings. Robert Carson came in after, got one out, but was removed with a left shoulder strain. Ramon Ramirez finished up the inning, and Parnell followed with a dominant eighth in a case of too little, too late. In case the Mets had any hope of a full on comeback, Rauch allowed a two-run bomb in the ninth to put the Pirates ahead 10-6 at the time, which happened to be the final score.

Offense was alive tonight, which made me feel a little better. The Mets dropped a three spot in the bottom of the first to back up McHugh, off back-to-back HRs from Justin Turner and David Wright. Did you expect that? The Mets would drop another three in the bottom of the seventh from an RBI single from Valdy and a two-out RBI single by Wright. The Pirates were not exactly perfect on defense either tonight…they gave us our chances, but it was a tough uphill battle.

Notes

1,418 hits for David Wright – tied with Ed Kranepool. Tomorrow could be the night he cements himself in the history books forever. (And I’ll be at the game! Go figure.)

Wright and Tejada had two hits each. Wright’s HR was his 20th; Turner’s HR was his second.

Steal number 10 for Valdespin. Still going to stick by my future Brandon Phillips comment.

McHugh falls to 0-3 in four starts this season. Tough – he should have at least won his first start.

I am not sure if I am allowed to criticize, but Alderson can really suck the life out of a room. That is not a huge shot at him personally… I just thought he seemed uncomfortable during the interview.

Oh, Robert Carson. The X-rays were negative, and there will be a preliminary MRI tomorrow. It does not look serious. On the injury front, they have not made a decision on Frank Francisco. However, Collins stated that he did not feel ready to play catch today, so “it is reaching that point of no return.” To clarify, that is not career threatening or anything. He just might be shut down for the remainder of the season.

Jeremy Hefner takes on Jeff Locke tomorrow evening as the Mets look to scavenge a win at home. The game starts at 7:10, and as previously mentioned, I will be there if anyone wants to meet up.
