The team announced that third baseman David Wright suffered a right hamstring pull sliding into second base while attempting to steal in the eighth inning.

Wright will have an MRI on Wednesday morning to determine the severity and grade of the hamstring injury.

Utility infielder Eric Campbell is on his way to New York in case Wright goes on the disabled list. He likely would get the lion’s share of playing time at third base.

Outfielder Michael Cuddyer said that while the team feels bad for Wright, they can’t dwell on the loss of their captain.

“As a team you don’t have time to feel sorry for yourself,” Cuddyer said. “You have to continue to play and pick him up as he’s picked us up so many times.”

Manager Terry Collins had a similar message for his team. “We may not have David for a little bit, but we got to compete and play hard. We got to pick up the slack. We still got a good team.”

Wright hoped that his teammates would continue to stay focused and positive.

“Whatever happens with me, we’re still going to be a good team and I still expect us to go out and win games,” he said. “We got too much good vibes and good things going for us to let a minor injury derail that.”

Anyway you slice it, this is a critical blow for the Mets if Wright does land on the DL as many expect. Let’s hope he gets back soon.
