David Wright‘s nagging injury issues persist.

According to Anthony DiComo of MLB.com, Wright was re-examined Monday by back specialist Dr. Robert Watkins in Los Angeles. According to the organization, Wright’s shoulder and back issues persist and he will refrain from baseball activity for another eight weeks.

David Wright spoke with the press this morning and the biggest piece of news that came out of that was the captain plans to work with Dr.Watkins in LA, meet the team for Opening Day, and continue rehabbing around the club. He also announced what his target date could be to ramp up again.

“Hopefully I could start my spring training two months from now. That would be the goal.”

He also talked about the reason for the shutdown of his rehab yesterday.

“I knew things weren’t going as well as I’d hoped… The more we tried to put on my plate, the worse my body was responding.”

The 35-year-old appeared in just 75 games for New York in 2015-16. He did not appear in a game for them this past season. However, he has underwent disk fusion surgery, rotator cuff surgery and a laminotomy procedure in the last calendar year in an effort to get back on the field.

Last month, the captain said that he wants to try the best he can to get on the field, but if his body doesn’t cooperate, he may be done.

“It’s a decision every athlete wants to make where they get to make that decision [on retirement],” he said. “You don’t want your body making that decision for you. If we get to the point where I’m feeling good enough to give it a go, then I certainly want to give it a go.

“It’s certainly been an uphill climb for me. I’d love to play again. But my body’s gotta hold up, and gonna have to cooperate with me a little bit.”
