New York Mets third baseman David Wright has amped up his activities over the past week to try to ready himself for opening day. While doing so he has encountered some stiffness, but not where we believe he would.

“Not in his back — but his legs are stiff, which we totally expect,” Manager, Terry Collins said. “The other day he scored from first base on that double. I don’t think he’d run that hard yet. He’s doing fine. He feels good.” (ESPN)

Wright, played in back to back spring training games over this past weekend for the first time. Collins has also indicated that Wright will see some more at-bats against minor leaguers today. He is also scheduled to play in grapefruit league games Thursday and Friday.

There has been some talk with the Mets starting the season in Kansas City that Collins may utilize Wright in the DH role. The manager though put an end to any notion that may happen.

“He’s one of the best third basemen in baseball,” Collins said. “Do we have a better guy to put at third base than him? I don’t think we do.”

It will be interesting to see how the captain and his back bounces back during this second week of ramped up activity. Now 33, David is still part of the heart and soul of this team and will be very much relied upon as Collins pointed out.
