If you had any concerns about the Mets possibly rushing Matt Harvey to the majors too soon, then you might want to sit down for this one…
According to Brian Costa of the Wall Street Journal, Terry Collins told reporters this afternoon that Zack Wheeler is not out of the mix for a promotion to the majors this season.
Collins threw that log into the fire while discussing Matt Harvey’s future which could start a week from today.
Wheeler, who was acquired from the Giants last July for Carlos Beltran, is still in Double-A Binghamton, but last week Sandy Alderson said he could be close to a promotion to Triple-A Buffalo.
Currently, Wheeler is 8-4 with a 2.62 ERA while walking 35 and striking out 88 in 92 2/3 innings pitched over 15 starts.
The 22-year-old right-hander has held batters to a .204 average, but lately he has allowed 12 earned runs in his last three starts.
I don’t know if Collins is relaying this information directly from the front office, but if that’s the case, we’re seeing a major shift in organizational strategy in year two of the new regime.
People used to say that 2006 was the worst thing ever to happen to Omar Minaya. I hope this run for a wild card spot doesn’t equate into the same thing for Sandy Alderson.
Now is not the time to hit the panic button.
