This afternoon in Atlanta, Terry Collins spoke with reporters about the future of the rotation and what it means for Mets prized prospect Matt Harvey.
The Mets manager said that in all likelihood, Harvey or Miguel Batista will start next Saturday’s game against the Los Angeles Dodgers at Citi Field.
Harvey will be pitching on Monday for the Bisons in what is being tabbed as an audition for a dozen or more Mets officials who will all be on hand.
Adam Rubin of ESPN adds,
Collins pretty much echoed the critiques of scouts: Harvey’s curveball is solid, but he sometimes does not use it enough. And the changeup is inconsistent. And because the changeup is inconsistent, Harvey sometimes refrains from using it, and instead tries to dominate with his fastball. The organization preference is for Harvey not to worry about Triple-A success, take any lumps with the changeup if need be and develop it.
Harvey is 7-4 with a 3.39 ERA, in 18 starts with 42 walks and 102 strikeouts in 98 1/3 innings pitched. He is 2-2 with a 2.32 ERA in his past five starts with 9 walks and 38 K’s in 31 innings during that span.
So Monday is Decision Day for Harvey.
