In order to maximize Wilmer Flores‘ potential, the Mets will begin having the 26-year-old take reps in the outfield later this week.
Flores says he can’t remember the last time he has played in the outfield, and hasn’t done it since he’s been a professional. However, Flores wants to do whatever it takes to play.
“I learned how to play first base,” Flores said. “If I have to do it in the outfield to get one more game, I’ll do it. I don’t want to sit on the bench.”
With Michael Conforto likely to miss the beginning of the season, the team will head into Opening Day with four natural outfielders: Yoenis Cespedes, Juan Lagares, Brandon Nimmo and Jay Bruce.
Mets manager Mickey Callaway said while this move is to get Flores more playing time, it will also give them some more depth out there.
