Why Is Puello Still in Binghamton?

If you’re wondering like me why outfield prospect Cesar Puello hasn’t been promoted to Triple-A yet, Adam Rubin of ESPN New York sheds some light.

A team official suggested a promotion to Las Vegas is not imminently looming for Puello, though. The Mets do not mind Puello finally having a prolonged period of success. Plus, the outfield is about to become crowded in Triple-A with den Dekker very soon joining the 51s outfield, which already includes Mike Baxter, Jamie Hoffmann and part-time outfielder Eric Campbell and Brian Bixler.

When I see legitimate prospects blocked by the likes of Baxter and Bixler, it really makes me wonder about the decision-making process of our player development people.

After collecting two more hits and a pair of RBIs on Monday for Double-A Binghamton, Puello is now batting .338/.407/.616 in 58 games with 14 doubles, 14 home runs and 51 RBIs in 216 at-bats.

By the way… Last night, Rafael Montero showed he was mortal after all after lasting just three innings in his third start for Triple-A Las Vegas. The righthander was tagged for four earned runs on five hits and he uncharacteristically walked three batters. Only 39 of his 74 pitches were strikes.

Sandy Alderson recently downplayed any chance that we would see Montero called up at any point this season.
