New York Mets left fielder Michael Cuddyer was out of the lineup again on Wednesday. It was the sixth game he’s missed in the team’s last eight, because of his sore and swollen left knee.

Cuddyer received cortisone and lubricant injections in his knee last Wednesday, but apparently to no avail.

According to manager Terry Collins, the Mets left fielder will have his knee examined by team doctors either today or on Friday.

Some have questioned why the team didn’t opt to place Cuddyer on the disabled list when the issue first arose. Had he gone to the DL at that time, he would’ve been eligible to come back on the first day after the All Star break.

Taking that out a little further, many on Mets social media felt that with Cuddyer on the DL, the team could have gotten a two week look at top prospect Michael Conforto.

At best, the arguments go, Conforto comes up and sparks the sluggish Mets offense, and at worst he shows he’s not ready and goes back to Double-A.  But some say that promoting him to the majors before he’s ready would ruin him.

On the bright side, Eric Campbell who started in Cuddy’s place on Wednesday,  contributed in a big way, going 2-for-4 with a ninth inning, two-run homer in the Mets 4-1 victory over the defending World Series champion Giants.

Cuddyer, who signed a two year $ 21 million dollar contract in the offseason, has been a major disappointment so far. He’s batting just .243 with six home runs and 28 RBI in 72 games.

His .662 OPS ranks as the worst among all starting left fielders in the majors, and he is batting .120 in his last 25 at-bats.
