You hear the word untouchable bandied about quite often in Mets circles. I’ve always felt that the Mets have always used the term all too often in years past and that in most cases it came back to haunt them.
Does a team that finishes the season in such disappointment two years running deserve to have so many untouchables on their squad?
What makes an untouchable so untouchable?
Some of the best known untouchables in Mets history included these future Hall of Famers.

3. Shawn Abner
4. Jay Payton
5. Butch Huskey
Last offseason, in addition to Major Leaguers David Wright, Jose Reyes, Carlos Beltran and Mike Pelfrey, the Mets felt it necessary to make prospects Bobby Parnell, Jon Niese, Fernando Martinez and Eddie Kunz untouchable. Most of those players were considered untouchable at the trading deadline as well except there were a couple of extra players included in Daniel Murphy and Nick Evans.
Excuse me for making a big stink out of this, but unless we were trying to preserve the roster of a team that has just won a World Series, what’s the deal with all of these untouchables?
In the last few days, I have seen some readers calling for the Mets not to trade Ryan Church, Carlos Delgado and even Luis Castillo if you can believe that!
I think this entire untouchableargument is insane and that the Mets should keep all of their options open. We should be prepared to move Murphy, Evans, Church, Niese and Parnell if it means we can get someone who can help improve the makeup of this team.
It’s so easy to say trade Aaron Heilman, Scott Schoeneweis and Duaner Sanchez, but lets get real people, those three players have very little if any trade value right now.
If you want to see some of the trades you’re all yearning for, then everyone should be available.
