For the third consecutive game the New York Mets received a quality start from their starting pitcher as Zack Wheeler took his turn on the rubber in the team’s 7-3 victory over the San Francisco Giants.

Wheeler, 29, put together his fourth consecutive start of going at least seven innings Thursday afternoon as he allowed three runs over seven innings of work on three hits. He would walk just one batter one the day while striking out six as the team took the rubber match.

Zack kept his team in the game, leaving with the team trailing by a score of 3-2, putting them in prime position into what was a wonderful comeback victory.

Wheeler spoke of the team’s heart after the afternoon ballgame.

“If you keep runs off the board you have a good chance of winning with these guys every time,” Wheeler said. (MLB)

The right-hander allowed home runs to both Brandon Belt and Pablo Sandoval in the fourth and sixth innings respectively, accounting for all three runs allowed. He would go on to speak about those mistakes to the press.

“I made a couple of mistakes and luckily these guys picked it up for me and kept on battling and we pulled out a W,” Wheeler said.

Wheeler tossed 107 pitches in his seven innings of work, 78 of which landed for strikes as he took the no-decision as his record sits at 5-3 on the season and lowered his ERA to 4.61 with a WHIP of 1.23.

He has struck out a total of 93 batters in 84 innings pitched so far in 2019 in his 13 games started. Wheeler is seemingly starting to find himself in a bit of a groove as the team looks to have their starting rotation pitch deeper into games due to the constant struggles of a beleaguered bullpen.

Wheeler has been able to give this team exactly what it needs over his last few starts as they hope to see it continue and build upon a series victory against the Giants.
