Pete Alonso‘s walk-off home run against the St. Louis Cardinals Thursday was so nice, we had to watch it again.

With Francisco Lindor starting the bottom of the 10th on second base due to the “ghost runner” rule, Alonso turned on Giovanny Gallegos‘ second pitch of the day and parked it 447 feet away in left field. The ball traveled 113.7 mph off the bat. It was Alonso’s hardest-hit ball of the year so far. It was also the third walk-off home run of his career.

He capped it off by stopping about 15 feet before home plate and taking a jump shot with his helmet as the basketball. Then he hoisted his body into the air and stomped down on home to give the Mets the 7-6 win.

“I was looking in my zone, and my zone only,” Alonso said of Gallegos’ pitch after the game. “He came in there, and thankfully I capitalized.” He ended his postgame words with his usual “LFGM.”

With the two RBIs on the homer (plus an RBI earlier in the day), Big Pete now leads the major leagues in RBIs with 36. His 10 home runs also ties him for first in the National League with C.J. Cron. He’s fifth in MLB first baseman with 1.2 fWAR. Needless to say, he’s off to a great first quarter of the season.

He also has a 1.226 OPS and 231 wRC+ in high-leverage spots (21 plate appearances) in 2022.

Alonso’s 162-game pace is: 40 home runs, 145 RBIs, 170 hits, 24 doubles, .866 OPS and a 4.9 fWAR.

He may fall shy of some of those marks, but getting a 4-5-win season from Alonso, along with the way Brandon Nimmo, Jeff McNeil and Francisco Lindor are performing, can carry the Mets over the next month or two as the team tries to get its starting rotation healthy again.
