At the Robinson Cano and Edwin Diaz press conference at Citi Field on Tuesday, Brodie Van Wagenen talked about the trade, and his plans for then rest of the off-season.
He started by announcing the deal, and went on the discuss how Cano is a decorated second baseman, “one of the best second baseman in history”, and Edwin Diaz, who he called “the best closer in baseball.”

He continued with mentioning how “We did not make this move to be our last move.”
The Mets likely still need at least two relievers, a catcher and a right-handed bat to fill out their roster.
“I stated that this organization intended to be relentless and fearless in the pursuit of greatness” said Van Wagenen after. “This trade should be a signal to our fans that words alone will not define our franchise.”

When asked of specific plans for the off-season, Brodie said “Everything is possible and nothing is impossible.”
He commended Jeff Wilpon for being in constant contact throughout the process, despite Jeff’s international travel. He later added “The New York Mets and the ownership group, we have a winning mindset.”

Brodie, when addressing the team’s past, said “One of the things I think this club suffered from the last couple years is putting a lot of weight into ‘ifs'”, seemingly looking for more answers rather than questions.
As for the Noah Syndergaard trade front, Brodie said “very special circumstances for us to even consider” a deal involving Noah Syndergaard. He also mentioned how he would not deal Syndergaard for prospects.
