As Mets fans often say at the end of a season, “There’s always next year.”

According to Westgate Sportsbook Las Vegas, “next year” might not be as far-fetched as some may think, as the Mets have 30-1 odds to win the World Series in 2019, the same odds as teams like the Oakland Athletics and the Colorado Rockies. It is important to note that both those teams made the postseason in 2018, albeit as wild card teams.

Interestingly, the Mets have higher projected odds to win the World Series in 2019 than the Tampa Bay Rays, who have 40-1 odds, yet the latter won 90 games in a stacked AL East Division last season.

The Mets also have 18-1 odds to win the National League Pennant in 2019, about middle of the pack.

While odds are not necessarily predictions, the more popular one team is, the more likely Vegas looks at and considers that team to be a favorite to win it all. As you might expect, the Red Sox and Astros lead the pack with 6-1 odds to win the championship in 2019 with the Dodgers and crosstown rival Yankees next in line at 7-1 odds.

Based on these recent released odds, the consensus seems to indicate the Mets will be a middle of the road team in 2019, which is decent when you remember that the Mets finished with the fifth-worst record in the National League in 2018.

It should be known, however, that each team that made the playoffs in 2018 finished with 90+ wins, so any chance the Mets have at contention in 2019 will hinge greatly upon the health of the current roster, as well as any free agent signings and/or trades that newly-hired GM Brodie van Wagenen expects to make this winter.

The Red Sox may have just been crowned the champions in 2018, but it is never too early to start looking ahead at what lies ahead in 2019 for the Mets.
