The New York Mets announced that the team has optioned Jacob Rhame to Triple-A Las Vegas in order to make room for Jason Vargas, who was activated from the 10-day disabled list.
Vargas missed almost a month of the season with a broken right hamate bone, which is his catching hand.
This was the expected move, as Rhame was just recalled yesterday to add bullpen depth when they optioned Corey Oswalt.
Vargas is set to make his first start with the team in over a decade tonight against the San Diego Padres.
The 35-year old southpaw went 18-11 with a 4.16 ERA, 4.67 FIP and 1.330 WHIP over 179.2 innings in 2017 with the Kansas City Royals. He dazzled in the first half, but struggled quite a bit after the All-Star break.
Rhame had a stint earlier in the season with the team as well, in which he pitched 3 2/3 innings while allowing three runs and striking out two batters. He also recorded his first career save of his career on April 8.
