Last night, a red-hot Jordany Valdespin went 3-for-3 with a double, triple, three runs scored, a walk, and an RBI, as he continues to demolish the Pacific Coast League. If he isn’t named the PCL Player of the Week on Monday I’d be shocked…
In his last ten games, Spin is batting .573 and overall since his demotion, the 25-year old enigma has a .513/.578/.821 slash with a 1.398 OPS. In 39 at-bats, Valdespin has 20 hits including two doubles, a triple and two home runs while driving in 16 runs and scoring another 16.
Playing predominantly second base for the 51s, Valdespin is on an offensive rampage the likes of which hasn’t been seen from any player in Las Vegas in years. All the more remarkable is his six walks while only striking out four times. His contact-rate is off the charts… Literally.
Said one of his teammates to me on Friday night, “I’ve never seen anything like this since turning pro. He is electrifying and you can’t take your eyes off of him.”
And yet instead of being overjoyed by these reports, raves and accolades, I find myself feeling frustrated. Frustrated because I’m mad at the fact he couldn’t fit in the way Juan Lagares has. Frustrated because he couldn’t quite grasp the “team” concept. Frustrated because he couldn’t be the Met we all hoped he would be.
“The saddest thing in life is wasted talent.” It’s a quote from A Bronx Tale that applies perfectly to Jordany Valdespin who could have been our team’s catalyst. But instead he’s in Sin City putting on show for the few thousand fans who pay seven bucks to catch a ballgame and kill some time.
In a recent chat, Adam Rubin of ESPN New York was asked when Valdespin would get recalled from Triple-A. Rubin replied that he wouldn’t be surprised if Valdespin stayed in the minors for the rest of the year, not even getting called up in September when rosters expand.
I’m afraid I’d have to agree with Adam on this. I get the same sense from reading the tea leaves… It doesn’t matter if he breaks every minor league record in the books… I don’t think we’ll ever see him again at Citi Field unless it’s in an opposing uniform.
That sucks… And that’s why I’m so frustrated…
