The Minnesota Twins have outrighted 1B/3B Trevor Plouffe according to Mike Berardino of the St. Paul Pioneer-Press. He is expected to clear waivers and become a free agent today.
Plouffe, 30, was due to earn a projected $8.2 million through arbitration which the Twins decided he wasn’t worth with the young Miguel Sano figuring to be their cornerstone at third base.
The right-handed hitting Plouffe had a down year in 2016 offensively, hitting only .260/.303/.420 with 13 doubles, 12 home runs and 47 RBI in 344 plate appearances. He posted a 0.4 bWAR, his worst since 2011 and coming after a 2.5 bWAR 2015 season.
Plouffe played 63 games at third base and 13 games at first base this season. He also has major league experience at second base, shortstop, right field and left field.
The splits are pretty stark for Plouffe who has a career .809 OPS against lefties while having just a .697 OPS off right-handed pitching.
