Update 5/4/2022:

Mets reliever Trevor May is shut down a month due to a stress reaction in the lower portion of his right humerus. May will then be reevaluated.

May says his timeline to return from the injured list is approximately 8-to-12 weeks, putting him at a return in late June or July.

“I’m just not right, I gotta get right,” May said. “Making that decision is one of the hardest things to do in this game. Knowing now that there is something up and you need to fix it in order to move forward and provide value to this team. It’s a special group. I’m going to be hanging around here and go through this process in New York. I don’t want to disconnect from this team. I want to be here locked in so when I get right I can go and contribute right away.”

No May is a tremendous blow to the Mets bullpen. It was displayed Wednesday afternoon when manager Buck Showalter went with Adam Ottavino for the third straight day. Ottavino entered the game with the bases loaded and one out. All three of his inherited runners scored, plus three more. He failed to record an out.

New York doesn’t have many internal options for a replacement. The likeliest is Tommy Hunter but he’s still ramping up and won’t be ready for the bigs until the end of May.

Original Post:

The Mets announced on Tuesday before their doubleheader with the Braves at Citi Field that they’ve placed right-handed reliever Trevor May on the 15-day injured list. The rules just went back to 15-day IL along with roster sizes to 26 on Monday.

To take May’s spot on the roster, the Mets have recalled right-handed pitcher Adonis Medina.

May has been dealing with right triceps inflammation recently and even had an MRI for it earlier in the season. The reliever told reporters on Monday night after a rough outing vs the Braves that he was still not feeling 100% healthy.

May, a free agent after the season, has allowed eight runs on 13 hits in 8 1/3 innings this year. His strikeout rate from 2021 of 11.9 K/9 has dropped all the way down to 5.4 K/9 this season.

Medina, 25, faced three batters and struck all of them out in his Mets debut on April 23. He was sent down to Triple-A Syracuse following the outing. Medina has a 3.00 ERA in six innings for the Syracuse Mets this season.

The Mets acquired Medina on April 7 when they claimed him off waivers from the Pirates.
