2018 is quickly coming to a close, and as a result we here at Metsmerized Online would like to acknowledge some of the achievements by the team during this past season.

Thus, here are the top five plays from the Mets offense during the 2018 season.

5. Walk-off Wilmer Comes Through Against the Brew Crew

The red hot Mets battled with the Milwaukee Brewers in this Jackie Robinson Day matinee. The Mets nine game winning streak was snapped the night before, as the Brew Crew took the middle game of this three game set 5-1.

The Mets jumped out to an early 1-0 lead, but as so often in 2018 the bullpen was unable to hold on and the Brewers jumped ahead 2-1 in the top of the sixth. However, the Mets answered right back and tied the game at two in the bottom half of the inning on a Brandon Nimmo solo shot.

The scored stayed that way until the bottom of the ninth. With two outs, Wilmer Flores dug into the box facing Matt Albers. Flores crushed a 1-2 sinker from Albers over the left center field fence to send the Citi Field faithful home happy.

This was the Mets first walk-off home run of the season. Since 2014, Flores has the most walk-offs of anyone in baseball. In 2018, he surpassed David Wright as the Mets all-time leader in walk-off RBIs with ten.

4. Steven Matz Homers in Back-to-Back Starts

Over the past couple of years, Mets pithing has been known for handling the bats well. Noah Syndergaard, Jacob deGrom, and even Bartolo Colon have all homered for the Mets. In 2018, it was Steven Matz’s turn to get in on the fun.

On September 12 with the Mets trailing 2-0 in the second inning to the Miami Marlins, Matz stepped up to the plate and took matters into his own hands. On the first pitch he saw, Matz crushed his first career home run, a no-doubter to deep left field.

In his next start, Matz showed off his power again and this time made a little history. In the top of the third inning, Matz helped out Jacob deGrom by poking a 1-1 offering from Aaron Nola over the left-centerfield fence in Citizens Bank Ballpark.

With that homer, Matz became just the third Mets pitcher to hit a home run in back-to-back starts. The only previous Mets pitchers to do so were Tom Seaver in 1972 and Ron Darling in 1989.

3. The Happiest Man in Baseball Plays Hero in the Desert

The Mets bats were held silent for the most part during this Fathers Day matinee. With two outs in the top of the ninth, they were trailing the Diamondbacks by a score of 3-1.

The Diamondbacks defense then handed the Mets some baserunners. Jose Reyes reached on a bunt, which Diamondbacks catcher Alex Avila questionably didn’t allowed to roll foul. Reyes proceeded to steal second, and then came around to score as Jon Jay misplayed a Jose Bautista fly ball into a double.

Brandon Nimmo then stepped into the box, and smacked a monstrous go-ahead two run home run to give the Mets a 4-3 lead. Asdrubal Cabrera followed that up with a solo shot of his own, and the Mets went on to secure a thrilling 5-3 victory.

2. Conforto and Frazier Go Back-to-Back with Two Outs in the Ninth

In this makeup game, Matz’s first career home run provided the early thunder for Mets fans. Heading into the bottom of the ninth inning, the homer was one of just two hits on the afternoon for the club.

Kyle Barraclough entered the game to protect a 3-2 lead for the Marlins in the ninth. The righty retired both Jay Bruce and Dominic Smith easily, and then the fun began…

Michael Conforto smacked the second pitch he saw from Barraclough to deep right, into the Coca Cola corner, to tie the game at 3. Three pitches later, Todd Frazier blasted a walk-off solo shot to carry the Mets to a thrilling 4-3 victory.

The Mets carried that momentum into Game 2, as they took home a 5-2 win, and swept the doubleheader.

1. Nimmo’s First Career Walk-off Beats the Phillies in Ten

In this July division match-up, the Mets and Phillies battled in a pitchers duel. Jacob deGrom provided the Mets with eight shutout innings, and as was the case for most of the 2018 season, his offense could not come through for him.

Heading into the bottom of the tenth, the Mets had just two hits against Vince Velasquez and the Philadelphia bullpen.

Finally with two outs in the tenth, the offense was able to break through. Amed Rosario lined a double to left, followed by a Jose Reyes walk. Mickey Callaway then called upon an ice cold Brandon Nimmo to pinch-hit. Nimmo entered this game riding a 6-for-46 slump with 20 strikeouts during that stretch.

However, he came through in this huge spot. Nimmo crushed a first pitch curveball from Mark Leiter into the right field seats for his first career walk-off home run. Nimmo was one of the lone bright spots on the Mets in 2018.

He finished the season with 28 doubles, 7 triples, 17 home runs, a 4.4 WAR, and a .404 OBP which was second in the National League.
