According to Andy Martino of SNY, the New York Mets are looking at the possibility of having Tony DeFrancesco join the major league staff. DeFrancesco has been a part of the Mets organization since 2018 when he was named the manager of the Las Vegas 51s.

Mike Puma of the New York Post notes that DeFrancesco would also take over the catching instructor duties.

He remained the Mets’ AAA manager for 2019 as the team moved to Syracuse. DeFrancesco interviewed for the Mets manager job before the job eventually went to Beltran. Martino also reports that DeFrancesco is well-liked in the organization.

The role that DeFrancesco is reportedly being considered for is first base coach. DeFrancesco has only spent one year of his 26-year coaching career as a base coach. That one year was in 2008 with the Oakland A’s when he was the team’s third base coach. The A’s had a 12.4 BsR in 2008, which was fourth-best in baseball. The A’s had a BsR of -7.0 in 2007, which was 21st in baseball.

DeFrancesco has a ton of minor league managerial experience. He has 25-years of managerial experience in all different minor leagues, including the AFL. DeFrancesco also has limited major league managing experience. He was the interim manager of the Houston Astros in 2012, he led the team to a 16-25 record. It’s easy to see why the Mets would want to promote DeFrancesco to the major league staff.
