Last night’s loss to the Braves sucked big time… This much is true… But what bugged me the most was how it wiped out a brilliant performance by Dillon Gee who continues to dominate after injuries saw him start the season off in some pretty dire straits.
The Mets wasted Gee’s seven shutout innings and the fact he had a no-hitter through six became an afterthought. The right-hander didn’t seem to mind it, but I sure did…
“I don’t ever think that,” said Gee. “I was just trying to win a game, really. No-hitters, I feel like, it’s a lot of luck involved in that. There’s really nothing on my mind at that point.”
This would be the second time that Gee was denied a win in such heartbreaking fashion. The first, you might recall, was when he took a shutout into the ninth and then lost it on a bloop and a blast, the deathblow coming on a two-run walk-off homer to Freeman at Turner Field.
“I mean, it’s always tough to lose,” Gee said regarding the sting of both Met losses.

It looks like everyone is ready to throw Bobby Parnell under the bus for what took place last night. I’m not. The conditions out there were pretty bad and let’s not pretend that Craig Kimbrel escaped his own blown save thanks to an unbelievable game saving catch that denied Justin Turner of a walk-off double.
The real goat here is the inconsistent and all-too-often underperforming Mets offense, especially with runners in scoring position. As someone pointed out to me last night, the number of quality starts this team has squandered because of a lack of run support is alarming. You can easily add five wins each to Jeremy Hefner and Dillon Gee’s win column, and Matt Harvey would have at least 16 wins right now.
This team needs some offensive players in the worst way. It’s great how we lucked out on Marlon Byrd who only was signed as a favor to his agent who begged Sandy Alderson to sign him. Imagine life in 2013 without him?
Anyway, great job by Gee last night who continues to cement his spot in the 2013 rotation and beyond, and is a shining example that if you can throw strikes and pinpoint your control, you don’t need a 98 mph fastball.
