According to the New York Post’s Mike Puma, amongst many other sources, when Mets outfielder Yoenis Cespedes was asked to talk to the media after the first full team workout, he was quoted as saying “Not today, not tomorrow, not at all this year.”
This sparked outrage from many different outlets, and of course Mets twitter came alive yet again. But what if you the fan, or you the member of the media walked in Yoenis Cespedes’s shoes?
Why would Cespedes want to even give the media the time of day after everything they’ve said about him the last few seasons?
Between being forced to play through hamstring trouble, the calcification of both of his heels that led to surgery, and the whole wild boar situation, what Yoenis Cespedes has gone through since the 2018 season, is something out of a bad movie. It seemed as if he could not get out of his own way.
One thing after another just piled up on the Mets outfielder, and the first people to attack was the media. Yes they are doing their job by getting the facts out there, but on multiple occasions, members of the media took potshots at him whenever they could.
Now that Cespedes might actually be healthy and is focusing on building his strength so he could avoid the injured list this season, some members of the media are stomping their feet because he has refused to talk to them… And not just now, but also well into the future.
The message to beat reporters who had fun at his expense is plain and simple; Yoenis Cespedes is a human too.
Nobody can tell you personally what Cespedes is thinking, but maybe this is something he feels is necessary for his own good and well being. Or, it could be that he simply feels he doesn’t owe the media anything, which he doesn’t.
All athletes are human. That includes Yoenis Cespedes. If he doesn’t want to talk, so what? He does not owe anyone anything.
