The Mets are desperate.
“We really, really have put ourselves in a tough spot,” manager Jerry Manuel said. “And we’re the only ones to blame for that. We had opportunities and didn’t get it done.”
Desperate times call for desperate measures.
The Mets are asking Johan Santana to pitch on three days rest and start in todays game against the Marlins. Supposedly, the Mets’ ace went to Jerry Manuel and said that he would be willing to pitch in today’s game. This comes after throwing a career high 125 pitches to beat the Cubs on Tuesday.
After shelling out an unprecedented $139 million dollars for the prized lefty, the Mets are now willing to take the ultimate risk and pay the ultimate price for keeping their slim hope for October baseball alive.
It would be one thing if the Mets controlled their own destiny, but as I mentioned in the previous post they do not. Even if they win the next two games, there’s no guarantee that the Mets get in. The odds are long because the Mets have brought this upon themselves.
Now they risk the possibility of a serious injury to their ace lefthander because of their inability to get the job done last night. How can they take such a chance and potentially ruin their maiden season in their new ballpark in 2009?
Either way they must win both games, so why not figure out how to win today without putting Johan Santana in harms way?
I hope they know what they’re doing, but gotta tell you, I don’t like the smell of this.
