matt harvey jacob deGrom

I’m always amazed recently at why so many Mets fans, bloggers, and even media members, are so so obsessed with trying to decide which of the Mets great young pitchers is the true ace of the team. Why is that such a thing?

Isn’t just comforting to know that we have three or maybe four or possibly even five aces on this team in 2016? Why can’t we just revel in that? I don’t understand why you have to pick and choose just one of Matt Harvey, Jacob deGrom or Noah Syndergaard. Why can’t we just have three co-aces on the team.

Back during the glory years of the Atlanta Braves, when they had that impressive run in the nineties, I wonder if they debated year in and year out who their ace was. Maddox? Glavine? Smoltz?

The fact of the matter is that they were all aces and it was dramatically instrumental in their overall success. When Tom Glavine would have an off year (especially the season after he won the Cy Young Award) Greg Maddux and John Smoltz stepped up and picked up the slack.

When John Smoltz had an off year (and also an injury plagued season) Tom Glavine and Greg Maddux picked up the slack . What’s important to note about those great Braves teams is not who the ace was, but that the team possessed three front-line, top of the rotation starters.

Well guess what… The Mets may have FOUR top of the rotation starters with an outside chance that that number could be five in 2016 or maybe 2017 when Michael Fulmer will be ready to join the rotation. I hope you didn’t forget about him.

So dwell on that my friends, and forget about trying to figure out whether Jacob deGrom, Matt Harvey or Noah Syndergaard is the ace of the team, because the fact of the matter is that they are all aces, and the thought of that brings a smile to my heart.

Let’s Go Mets!
