Just when it looked like the Mets were in danger of losing two of three to the Cincinnati Reds, the team found a way to manufacture the runs they so desperately needed. For an offense that has struggled over the last few weeks, a comeback win like that could not have come at a better time.

The Mets trailed the Reds 3-2 heading into the top of the ninth. With one out in the inning, the Mets began to rally. Brandon Nimmo reached base with a well-struck single to left-center. Four pitches later, the team got the big hit they had been looking for all night. Starling Marte put a good swing on a slider from Reds reliever Hunter Strickland, hitting the ball right down the third base line. Nimmo would come all the way around to score from first, helping the Mets send the game to extra innings.

Going into last night’s game, the Mets had yet to lose an extra-inning game in 2022. The team was able to keep that run going by putting together some great at-bats in the tenth. Dominic Smith put the Mets ahead with an RBI double down the first base line. Three batters later, James McCann dumped a single into left field, scoring Smith from second base.

Smith was preparing to slide more towards the outside of home base, until Mets center fielder Nimmo directed him to do otherwise. Nimmo laid flat on the ground as the throw came home, telling his teammate to take a route towards the inside of the bag. Smith avoided the tag by catcher Aramis Garcia, giving the Mets a 5-3 lead. “We really try to focus on the little things. I think that’s why we’re winning a lot of ballgames,” Smith said.

Nimmo would go on to add an exclamation point with a three-run home run to right field, his second home run of the series. Edwin Diaz would come in and strike out the side in the bottom of the tenth to close out an 8-3 victory for the Mets. “It was really important to pull it out at the end, especially with Max’s [Scherzer] start yesterday and [David] Peterson giving us everything he had today,” Nimmo said.

The Mets now head home to New York to begin a four-game series with the surging Miami Marlins before their highly-anticipated series with the Atlanta Braves next week.
