Baseball is a game, and it’s amazing how easily we forget that it’s purpose is to be for fun. But for both Mets fans and players alike, this simple concept had been lost in an abyss of financial instability, bad press, and five consecutive losing seasons.
Until Now.
When I went to the game two days ago, I noticed something different. For the first time since 2006, the fun was back. I couldn’t quite put my finger on it, it could have been the players waving the towels following runs, or the electric atmosphere in the stands, where Mets fans from all different walks of life high-fived each other after Jenrry Mejia sealed the deal. But the fun was most definitely back. Everybody on the 7 Train going home (with the exception of some intoxicated Braves’ fans) were in good spirits.
Maybe it’s the recent hot streak, or maybe Terry Collins is slipping the team happy pills, I don’t know and I don’t care. What I do care about is that the Mets have won consecutive series for the first time since the first week of June, and they are showing offensive signs of life as a team for the first time this decade it seems. Furthermore, they have considerable momentum going into the All-Star break, and a slightly less apathetic fan base to boot. While the playoffs might be out of reach this year, entertaining baseball at Citi Field is not.
When I left the stadium on that muggy July night, I felt something I hadn’t felt in a long time after leaving a Mets game.
Satisfaction.
Let’s keep the fun going and let’s kick some Marlins butt as we wrap up the first half this weekend and enter the All Star break.
