Washington Nationals Matt - Williams

I had an interesting text exchange with my buddy Mike who most of you know as Mike Lloyd on our comment threads.

Mike writes…

mmo feature original footerFor the Nats to win 90 games, they have to go 83-59 the rest of the way. That’s .585 baseball.

For the Mets to get to 90 they need to play .528 ball the rest of the way and go 75-67.

Perspective.

Buddy, if they can split these last two, and take 3 of 4 in Citi this weekend they could be a dozen games up by Cinco de Mayo.

The British played a tune called “The World Turned Upside Down” when they surrendered at Yorktown and marched out between the French and American army to end the Revolution.

Wonder what song the Nats will play when they leave Citi next weekend?

mets win 2

Not that I needed any convincing, but looking at those numbers, I’d say that barring a complete meltdown, the Mets are a virtual lock to make the playoffs. I believe 88 Wins will be the magic number for the wild card and that 94 victories will win the NL East.

With Matt Harvey, Jacob deGrom, and Bartolo Colon in the starting rotation, the Mets have virtually three stoppers which minimizes any potentially long losing streaks.

Last Wednesday, I wrote that this team has those two critical traits that all great teams have – resiliency and a never-say-die attitude. Last night against the Marlins, the Mets had both those traits on full display in what was an exhilarating and exciting comeback victory.

Watching this team persevere through one adversity or setback after another has boosted their confidence and hardened their belief that they can win any game, any time, no matter how bleak things may seem.

This is such a fun team to watch, but it’s also a playoff bound team. Before the season I said it was “playoffs or bust” for Terry Collins and this team, and that’s exactly where this train is heading – the playoffs.
