Jeff McNeil provided the New York Mets with their only two runs of the game in their 10-2 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers on Wednesday night at Citi Field.

The Mets had little to celebrate after their lackluster performance against the Brewers, with McNeil’s contributions on offense being among the few bright spots. The 30-year-old went 2-for-4 with a home run, run scored, and two RBIs.

McNeil’s home run came in the bottom of the fourth inning off an 82 MPH first-pitch curveball that Corbin Burnes left in the middle of the zone. The ball was launched 369 feet to the right field corner to cut the Brewers’ lead to 3-1.

McNeil’s second hit of the night came with two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning while the Mets were down 10-1. Brandon Nimmo was on third after a leadoff triple and Nick Plummer was on first after substituting for Starling Marte who was hit by a pitch and taken out of the game. McNeil lined one of Burnes’ cutters into right field for an RBI single but was thrown out at second trying to turn the hit into a double.

“He’s a good baserunner,” said Buck Showalter. “Tonight, he probably would like to have that one back.”

Showalter was slow to anger at McNeil as he was only one of two Mets with a multi-hit game.

“He’s one of two guys that did some things offensively for us, so I kind of dwell on that,” said Showalter.

McNeil’s two hits on Wednesday marked his 23rd multi-hit game of the season, that ties him for the major league lead. He’s now hitting .324/.375/.460 with 29 runs scored, four home runs, and 31 RBIs in 213 at-bats in 2022. His .324 batting average currently ranks sixth in MLB and second in the National League.
