With a pair of home runs that spelled the difference in the Mets 4-3 rubber match win in Atlanta, David Wright has now reached double digit home runs on the year and leads the team in almost every offensive category while putting on a show in the field. In the past two weeks, Wright has been particularly locked in, tallying seven multi-hit games, just in time for the final weeks of the All-Star Game voting.

Since June 5th, Wright is batting .407, and last night’s three hit performance pushed his OPS on the year over .900. Starting the month of June with a batting average in the .270’s, he has gotten himself back up to .304 for the season, despite having little protecting in the lineup. He now has himself 11 homers and 38 RBIs for the year, while also showing off his speed, stealing 12 bases and ripping four triples.

His catching fire has coincided with the injury to Giants third baseman and the undeserving current NL third baseman lead vote-getter Pablo Sandoval, who is currently nursing a strained left foot tendon. While Sandoval has been on the disabled list, Wright has closed the gap almost in half to 100,000 votes. Now that the “Kung Fu Panda” is expected to come off the DL in a matter of days, the competition for the starting job at the All-Star Game is only going to heat up that much more.

It has been well documented in recent years that Giants fans have stuffed the ballot to disgusting proportions. Currently, every single Giants starting position player are in the mix for the starting all-star positions, and that includes Gregor Blanco, Brandon Belt and an injured Angel Pagan. Is there an underground sweatshop under AT&T that pumps out punched out ballots? There maybe, but the result is that many players who deserve to have a shot at starting don’t get to, namely David Wright.

We saw it happen last year when Wright got beat out by Sandoval, are Mets fans really going to let that happen again, especially when the All-Star Game is at Citi Field? Maybe if fans got out and voted for their favorite team, then the Mets would have to go and reach out to organizations like Cougar Life.

Yes, the team is unsightly and there is little incentive to pay to see them, however why punish Wright for that? This is the guy who committed the rest of his baseball life to this team, based on the premise that he believes in the future of this organization. He wants to win here, and no where else. He has dedicated himself to the New York Mets and their fans and has played like an All-Star, especially in the month of June. Are Mets fans really going to let some West Coast panda stand at the hot corner come July 16th? The answer, at least I hope for most of you, should be no.
