Back in March, the Mets could have never imagined that Adam Wilk and Rafael Montero would be starting games for them by May. The fans wanted Jay Bruce run out of town. Noah Syndergaard could do no wrong in the eyes of fans. Michael Conforto was a promising prospect, but he had no place to play every day. They were a team built on pitching, with a lineup that was so-so at best.

This has all changed a little over a month into the season. The Mets are the exact opposite of what the Mets are built to be. It’s kind of like that “Seinfeld” episode when Elaine starts hanging out with Kevin, Gene and Feldman– these are the Bizarro Mets.

What was once considered the best staff in baseball currently stands as one of the worst. The Mets have the 5th-worst ERA in the NL right now at 4.64, put forward by a myriad of injuries and disappointing performances. Few were predicting the Mets to have three starters with ERAs north of five– and not one of their pitchers has pitched like an ace, with the exception of the injured Noah Syndergaard. Jacob deGrom leads non-injured Mets pitchers with a 3.80 ERA.

And on the offensive side of things– where the Mets have been far from elite over the last few seasons– the team has been raking. They have scored the seventh-most runs in the NL with 167, and tied for the third most home runs. As has been the case over the last few seasons, they have been very reliant on the home run ball.

The Mets also lead the majors with a .320 average and 142 wRC+ with runners in scoring position after being historically bad in that situation last season.

But what’s even more bizarro about the Mets’ offensive production is that it’s not coming from guys who have been consistent producers, like Yoenis Cespedes or Curtis Granderson. The team’s two best hitters are two guys who struggled mightily last year: Jay Bruce and Michael Conforto.

Bruce and Conforto combined to hit .220/.307/.406 last year. This year, their combined slash line is .305/.400/.602, and each are on pace for well over 30 home runs. It’s still early in the season, but Bruce and Conforto have been very encouraging this season.

While last season’s goats are carrying the lineup, last season’s key contributors have left something to be desired. Curtis Granderson, who hit 30 home runs last season, is batting just .139/.200/.270 this season with two home runs. Neil Walker is only batting .218/.298/.347. And while he’s played better recently, Jose Reyes is still batting below .200.

So if you predicted that this was how the Mets were going to look, you should probably go out and pick some lotto numbers. Because you’re pretty good at this stuff.
