Ruben Tejada delivered the knock-out blow with a bases loaded walk-off single in the ninth inning to give the Mets a 3-2 victory at Citi Field this afternoon over the Marlins. With the win the Mets complete their first sweep at home in over three months.
Game Highlights
David Wright went 1-for-4 and got the Mets on the board with his 19th home run of the season: a two-run blast in the first. He is now three hits shy of tying Ed Kranepool’s franchise record of 1,418 hits. Wright has the next four games to try and break the record at Citi Field.
Ruben Tejada delivered a huge walk off single with the bases loaded and two out in the ninth inning after going hitless in his first four at-bats. Miami intentionally walked Fred Lewis to face Tejada and that turned out to be a big mistake for Ozzie Guillen and the Fish.
Chris Young started and delivered six innings allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits and two walks. The one earned run came on a sac fly, and the other because of a throwing error by Kelly Shoppach. Young struck out five and did not factor into the decision.
The bullpen did a fine job in this one with Ramon Ramirez, Manny Acosta, and Bobby Parnell combining for three hitless innings in relief. Parnell was the beneficiary of the win.
On Deck
The Mets begin their final home series of the year when they host Pittsburgh on Monday night at 7:10 PM. Jenrry Mejia (0-1, 9.00 ERA) will take the mound and oppose the Bucs’ Kyle McPherson (0-1, 2.25).
Good for Ruben. As the season winds down and the Mets play out the final string of games, we can now appreciate how solid Tejada has been while trying to fill some big shoes. Nice going, kid…
This probably gives the Mets a good shot of not finishing in last place behind the Marlins. Although I know some Mets fans are probably saddened by that because of next year’s draft. I’m not one of them. 🙂
