Welcome to Opening Day!

Ask any die-hard fan of the Amazins and they’re sure to know that the New York Mets have the best record in baseball history on Opening Day with a nifty 35 wins and only 21 losses.

But did you know, that the Mets actually lost eight of their first nine opening day contests, and since 1971 they have been on an incredible 34-13 run, good enough for an amazing .723 winning percentage?

To celebrate today’s season opener at Citi Field against the St. Louis Cardinals, I’ve put together a Mets Opening Day Quiz to warm you up before Noah Syndergaard throws this afternoon’s first pitch.

Let’s see how many of these you can get right.

1. Who has made the most Opening Day starts for the Mets in franchise history, 12 of them to be exact?

2. Who scored the first run in franchise history on Opening Day, April 11, 1962?

3. On Opening Day in 1994, this opposing player would hit three home runs off  Dwight Gooden?

4. Can you name the only Mets player ever to start on Opening Day as the designated hitter?

5. This pitcher holds the MLB record with 16 Opening Day starts, including 11 of them for the Mets?

6. The Mets have played this team the most times on Opening Day and own a 9–1 record against them?

7. On Opening Day in 2000, this team defeated the Mets 5-3 in front of a sold-out crowd at the Tokyo Dome in Japan?

8. This player hit the first home run in franchise history on Opening Day in 1962 against the St. Louis Cardinals?

9. He was the oldest Opening Day starting pitcher in Mets history, toeing the rubber at the age of 42?

10. He pitched a complete game shutout and struck out 10 in 1970 when the Mets won their first ever Opening Day contest?

If you answered 8-10 of these questions correctly, you are a true orange and blue Mets fan and someone who clearly knows their Opening Day history. Well done!

I’ll post the answers in the thread at the start of today’s game at 1:10 PM.
