Anthony Dicomo of MLB.com reports that T.J. Rivera will not return to the team this season after getting Tommy John Surgery last year.

The team expected Rivera to return by the middle of the season initially, but plans changed as he suffered multiple setbacks during his rehab and will now miss the entire season as a result.

Rivera, 29, likely would have gotten a chance to at least earn a utility-infielder spot on the roster for next season given the Mets’ struggles this season.

For his career, Rivera has a .304/.335/.445 slash line with eight homers and 43 RBI. He also started at second base in the NL Wild Card Game for the Mets in 2016.
