Despite getting hit with a 97 MPH fastball by Noah Syndergaard, Carlos Gomez thankfully managed to avoid a serious injury.
Syndergaard handled the situation professionally as he regained his composure to finish the inning. He also had an awesome exchange with Gomez after the game on Twitter.
With Dillon Gee nearing a return to the MLB, Syndergaard understands that he needs to impress in order to remain in the rotation.
“I would love to stay,” Syndergaard said. “I’ll do everything possible to stay up here. I watched [Jacob] deGrom [Saturday] night pretty heavily and saw how he attacked hitters, and tried to transfer it over to the next day.” (Ken Davidoff, NY Post)
“If we think Noah Syndergaard’s our best option in that spot, he’ll stay, I would guess,” Terry Collins said. “We’re trying to win. Those decisions will be made, and we’ll stick by them. It’s nice to have an option that Dillon’s coming back, and after his [Single-A rehab] outing [Saturday] night, he’s throwing the ball pretty good. If we decide, ‘Hey look, let’s put him in the ’pen and solidify that a little bit.’ ”
“I know that those decisions are coming down the line,” Collins said. “We’re getting there. Certainly, an outing like today makes it hard”
Thoughts:
There’s no way the Mets can send down Syndergaard after yesterday’s start. He already showed he was major league ready with a 1.82 ERA in Triple-A, and the way he overpowered the Brewer’s lineup yesterday shows he has the ability to dominate with his explosive fastball and devastating breaking ball.
Gee may be a solid back of the rotation starter, but the decision should not be a hard one to make.
