If the season ended today, the Mets would be on their way to the post season… So why am I so down?

Scott Schoeneweis, was speechless after yesterdays loss.

“There’s no explanation anymore.  I just don’t know what to say. We’re not consistently making big pitches at big times.  We do it one night, we don’t do it the next night.  There’s really nothing more to say or explain or philosophize about.”

What a loser…

We’ve heard the same excuses all year long from Duaner Sanchez and Aaron Heilman too.

In fact, let me go on record as saying that if it were up to me, neither of these three so called relievers would make the post season roster. If I were President, “I’d fire them.”

I still believe the makeup of this bullpen is “fundamentally strong”.

Seriously speaking though, my biggest concern right now is not allowing the inept and impotent performances of Schoeneweis, Heilman and Sanchez, to keep this team from making the playoffs.

Up until now, I have been very patient with Jerry Manuel despite some of the problems I’ve had concerning his use of the bullpen. I can’t blame Manuel for the countless implosions that have placed the Mets in such a precarious position, but with seven days left to our season, I will hold him accountable if he gives either of these three lethargic relievers any further meaningful innings.

If we are going to lose, and that is our destiny, then let me lose with the ball in the hands of Robert Parnell, Joe Smith, Pedro Feliciano, Ricardo Rincon and Luis Ayala. Not that any of these options are any better, but at least I won’t have to be subjected to the whiny, puss-faced, demoralizing words and images that have become so predictable after one of the other three blow a lead.

Not only am I sick of their feeble excuses and their woeful and pitiful performances, even the sight of them emerging out of the bullpen door has become a source of great anxiety and suicidal tendencies.

If we are so lucky as to make the playoffs this week, regardless of how far we were to advance afterward, there would be a great feeling of satisfaction and purpose if Aaron Heilman, Duaner Sanchez and Scott Schoeneweis were left off the post season roster.

There would be some gratifying redemption to see neither of them share in any post season pleasure or glory. I know this is but a pipe dream, but the thought of it gives me great comfort on this Monday morning.
