The Mets and their wallets on are on ice
A year ago at this time the Mets and Los Angeles Dodgers were in very similar situations. Both clubs were going through some difficult financial times, and we were hearing frequent rumblings about their respective owners having to sell their teams.
Fast forward a year, and the Dodgers have been sold for $2 billion, and went on a spending spree. While the Mets received some good news regarding the Madoff case, they are still looking at “bottom end” free agents, according to General Manager Sandy Alderson.
The highly publicized Agent Scott Boras is known for his brash tactics when it comes to negotiating big money contracts for his clients. He is also not one to hold his tongue, and says what is on his mind. Sometimes his comments are a little off the wall, but other times they make a lot of sense.
Last year at the Winter meetings he was asked some questions regarding the state of the two financially strapped big market teams, the Mets and the Dodgers. Here was what he had to say.
”Normally, they’re in the steaks section, and I found them in the fruits-and-nuts category a lot.”
This season offseason, both teams enter the free agent market in very different financial situations. Boras once again was asked his thoughts on the Mets and the Dodgers financial situation.
Regarding the Dodgers he responded by saying:
”I think they bought the store,” he said. This was of course in reference to their big trades this past season where they acquired Hanley Ramirez, Josh Beckett, Adrian Gonzalez, and Carl Crawford.
And as for the Mets?
Boras said, ‘the best you can say is that they might be in the freezer section,” he explained. ”But there’s a lot of good, longstanding products that they can acquire there.”
It’s kinda funny when you hear these quotes. He’s right, the Mets wallets are in the freezer right now. They need to get themselves on firm financial footing before they can re-enter the steak section. For the time being, they’ll have to shop in the frozen foods section, but as Boras said, there are plenty of quality products there, you just have to be able to find them.
