Mets left-hander Steven Matz was sent home early on Tuesday due to an illness per David Lennon of Newsday. Lennon notes that Matz will miss his scheduled bullpen today, but is still expected to make his start on Friday.

Matz, 28, was the big topic of conversation on Monday as reports came out that the Yankees were scouting the Mets starter. The New York native pitched a career-high 160 1/3 innings last season, with a 4.21 ERA and 2.2 bWAR.

Matz is battling veteran right-handers Michael Wacha and Rick Porcello to round out the Mets rotation. There’s also the possibility of the Mets getting creative by using openers.
