Steven Matz was on MLB Network Radio on Monday morning and spoke on a variety of topics, intimating excitement about the team in 2020.

“We’ve just got to play to our potential after (what) we did in the second half and let the rest take care of itself,” Matz said. “I think going into the offseason, having that type of confidence as what we can do as a group — the group that was in this clubhouse. Not having to make these crazy changes or anything, it definitely gives you confidence.”

For the first time in three years, the Mets finished over .500 in 2019 with an 86-76 record which put the team three games back of the second NL Wild Card spot. The Mets also had a phenomenal second half this past season in which they went 46-26.

With the only key player set to hit the free agent market this offseason being Zack Wheeler, most of the team is set to remain intact as of now.

The team’s biggest addition so far is their new manager, Carlos Beltran, who commands respect from the clubhouse and the rest of the league from the get-go.

“We got really excited to see what we are capable of,” Matz said. “Now we’ve got a guy who is very well respected around the league coming in, and have that type of collaboration with Brodie (Van Wagenen) and him and all that type of stuff. I think that we are really excited and I think the fans are as well as to what we can do.”

As the Mets look to try and win in 2020, Steven Matz will be hoping to maintain something he had for the large majority of the 2019 season: health.

Matz, 28, tossed a career-high 160 1/3 innings and made 30 starts for the second consecutive season. He went 11-10 with 4.21 ERA, 4.60 FIP, and 1.341 WHIP in 2019 while averaging 8.6 K/9 as compared to 2.9 BB/9.

If Matz, as well as the rest of the starting rotation, can stay healthy in 2020 and the team can add some nice fortifying pieces to the roster in 2020, the team might find their way into the playoffs.
