matz steven

Update: The team has confirmed that Steven Matz has a torn lat muscle on the left side and will not throw for three weeks after being treated with a PRP injection at the Hospital for Special Surgery.

Apparently Matz told the team about the soreness after his first start, but the Mets had him make his second start and he pitched a gem despite the injury.

However the soreness became more pronounced and doctors today discovered the partial tear after he complained again to Mets trainers.

He was immediately treated with platelet rich plasma at the Hospital for Special Surgery to aid healing and ordered not to throw for three weeks. He will be reexamined after that.

Mets rookie pitcher Steven Matz has  suffered a significant lat injury and will miss “at least” several weeks, according to Daily News reporter Andy Martino.

Martino says a full report is coming and we’ll provide more details once they are available.

Adam Rubin confirms the injury, but his source says it’s not serious. While Marc Carig and Matt Ehalt learned that Jon Niese has already been told he’s starting on Sunday in place of Matz.

There’s been no confirmation from the team although that’s become the norm with player injuries and the Mets.

This totally sucks… The team has been ravaged with injuries all year going back to the start of spring training.

Matz is 2-0 with a 1.32 ERA in his first two major league starts for the Mets since being called up from Triple-A Las Vegas.

His next scheduled start was to be on Sunday at Citi Field against the Arizona Diamondbacks.
