Steve Cohen wants Pete Alonso to give him a tough decision.

The Mets owner will be on a new podcast, Meet the Apple, which premieres tomorrow, and in a preview clip broadcaster Howie Rose asked him about making Alonso a lifetime Met. The first baseman will be a free agent after the season.

“Listen, we want to keep him,” the 67-year-old owner said. “He’s an important part of our team today and hopefully in the future. We know the fans feel strongly about him. And I’m not tone deaf, OK. Like, I totally understand the fan’s love of Pete.”

Alonso, 29, hit 46 home runs and slashed .217/.318/.504 last season. His 192 home runs during his five years in the majors are the most in the league during that time. Pete recently said he would be open to having extension talks during the Mets 2024 season.

“I hope he hits 55 home runs and makes it so difficult on me, you know, in free agency, ” Cohen said. “So I would call that a great outcome.”
